02/03/2018
The Costa Rican Fencing Federation together with the Costa Rican Paralympic Federation are overseeing the project alongside project leads, Alberto Cruz and Sergio Castro.
The Costa Rican Fencing Federation together with the Costa Rican Paralympic Federation are working together to develop a programme to attract those with physical impairments into fencing.
President of the Costa Rican Fencing Federation, Luis Cruz said, "We are very happy and excited to develop fencing for athletes with impairments in our country. The idea is to motivate people to practice a sport. That’s why we want to open an academy to motivate and detect talent that in the future could represent Costa Rica in national and international tournaments."
With strong foundations in the ongoing development of wheelchair basketball, swimming, boccia, volleyball, athletics, cycling, goalball and powerlifting in the nation, it is hoped the focus on the development of wheelchair fencing will have similar success.
Andrés Carvajal, President of the Paralympic Federation of Costa Rica added, ‘We are sure that Wheelchair Fencing will be on the list of Costa Rican sports that make up the Paralympic movement worldwide’
We look forward to the welcoming Costa Rica to an IWAS Wheelchair Fencing event in the future!
