The IWAS World Youth Games returned to their roots in 2014, 11 years after the first edition was held in the British destination in 2005.

Stoke Mandeville is also the birthplace of the Paralympic Movement and fittingly, the 2014 World Youth Games hosted six Paralympic sports.

Archery, athletics, swimming, table tennis, powerlifting, wheelchair fencing were all contested.

A total of 230 athletes from 31 countries went for medals. The USA finished on top of the medals table with 70 podiums, including 24 golds. Hosts Great Britain finished second followed by the Czech Republic.

Two world records were broken during the Games. US powerlifter Jaque Bilingsley lifted 184kg in the men’s over 107kg. Kuwait’s Ahmad Almitairi lowered the men’s 100m T33 world record.
