The IWAS Youth World Games were held in the Americas for the second time in 2013.
With the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games fast approaching the Games helped promote Para sport in Central America and the Caribbean.
The slogan and theme of the event was ‘Inspire, Excel and Succeed’.
A total of 10 IWAS junior world records were broken as well as five European and two Americas records on the track and field.
Finland’s Henry Manni set four European marks whilst Germany’s Felix Streng claimed two junior world records.
As well as athletics, swimming, archery and Para triathlon were contested.
As a result of his performance, Streng was awarded with the IWAS Athlete with Potential Award. The USA’s Jessica Rogers, who competed in swimming and Para triathlon, and Iraqi archer Zainab Abdulwahhab were also given the accolade.
Streng would go on to win two bronze medals in the 100m and 400m at Rio 2016 three years later.
