The 2009 IWAS World Games featured an impressive 10 sports in a festival of Para sport competition and growth.

Two of these – table tennis and sitting volleyball – were demonstration events as the sports widened their international competition programme. Development activities were also held for wheelchair rugby.

Nearly 500 athletes from 40 countries competed overall in these sports and in swimming, archery, athletics, badminton, shooting, powerlifting and wheelchair fencing.

China topped the medals table in the year after they hosted the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games, showing the world that they had become a dominant force.
