World Abilitysport has announced the appointment of Harry Cootes as Acting Chief Executive Officer following the sudden passing of the organisation’s CEO, Charmaine Hooper.

Despite the loss, World Abilitysport emphasised its commitment to continuing the work and vision Charmaine championed and identified that maintaining stability and continuity in its operations as a key priority during this transition period.

To support this effort, Harry Cootes, currently Head of Sport at World Abilitysport, has been appointed Acting CEO until the end of June 2026.

World Abilitysport President, Rudi Van den Abbeele said, “Harry brings nearly seven years of experience within our organisation, a deep understanding of our sport programmes, and a proven commitment to our athletes and members. His leadership will guide us responsibly and confidently through this next chapter supported by the rest of the staff team.”

Acting CEO, Harry Cootes said, ‘I’m humbled to step into the role of Acting CEO and to support the organisation during this challenging period of transition. I remain committed to continuing the work and priorities established by Charmaine, particularly in strengthening opportunities and pathways across our sports, including Para fencing, powerchair hockey and Para dance sport.’

‘As we look ahead, our focus remains firmly on delivering high-quality international sporting events across all 3 sports, as well as ensuring a successful World Abilitysport Games programme this year.’
