Para Surfing has been announced as the Sport Expo at the 2025 World Abilitysport Beach Games, in a milestone collaboration between World Abilitysport, the International Surfing Association (ISA), Turkish Sailing Federation and Local Organisers, NPC Türkiye.

Para surfing is an adapted form of surfing for people with physical impairments and has been governed by the International Surfing Association (ISA) since 2015. Para surfing includes six physical impairment classes with athletes competing in standing, kneeling or prone positions depending on impairments.

ISA Para Surfing Head of Classification, Dr. Mo Johnson will host an ‘Introduction to Para Surfing’ on Sunday 19th October which will provide Team Managers with insight into the sport’s fundamentals, classification system and the knowledge necessary to support the introduction or growth of Para surfing in their countries.

On Monday 20th and Tuesday 21st October, teams will have the opportunity to have a go at the sport on Pompei Beach, a venue shared with the AirBadminton and Beach ParaVolley. Athletes and team staff alike will be invited to experience the sport first hand, adopting surf positions and introduced to the basics of the sport.

World Abilitysport CEO, Charmaine Hooper said, ‘We are thrilled to have Para surfing as the Sport Expo in Mersin. It is a fitting addition to our programme for the first Para sport Beach Games and we hope this is the start of a fruitful partnership between World Abilitysport and the International Surfing Association as we look to future editions of the Beach Games.’

ISA Director of Membership and Development, Alex Reynolds said, “We are excited to have our Head of Para Surfing Classification, Dr. Maureen Johnson, at the 2025 World Abilitysport Beach Games to introduce the sport and give athletes from the 26 countries competing, the opportunity to experience Para Surfing first hand.”

The 2025 World Abilitysport Beach Games will be hosted in the city of Mersin, Türkiye from 18-25 October hosting a competition programme of Beach ParaVolley, Para AirBadminton, Para Powerlifting, Adaptive Sepak Takraw, Para Laser Run and Para Inclusive Sailing.
