OFFICIALS AND VOLUNTEERS PLAY A CRITICAL ROLE IN SUCCESS OF THE IWAS WORLD GAMES

For any major sporting event to be a success the role of the officials and the volunteers is essential. Many people give up their time to ensure the smooth running of championships and the IWAS World Games here in Stadskanaal are no different.

There are about 100 officials most of them from Holland ensuring that the competitions are run smoothly and in accordance to the IPC rules.  However with the UK hosting many able bodied and disabled sporting events over the years GB has a quite a few officials with plenty of experience who regularly give up their time to support meetings when called upon.

Here in Stadskanaal a group of hardy officials who have been covering athletics for many years and have travelled from the UK at their own expense are helping to ensure that this week’s events go smoothly.

Ros Alterman one of the team with 30 years of officiating behind her told me   "Although it’s hard work, there are tremendous friendship, interaction and respect between the athletes and officials. We have watched athletes starting their careers and developing through to the elite Paralympic level, and we feel proud to follow and be part of their achievements.”

The volunteers have again been important to the Games and Johanna Kuiper whose on the LOC board said “Over 100 local people volunteered to support the Games and they are enjoying helping the athletes with all the different queries.” The young staff here at the Pagendal Sports Centre has also worked extremely hard in catering for the athletes and keeping the accommodation clean.
