IWAS Wheelchair Fencing Stadaskanaal World Cup Highlights

A round up of the three day IWAS Wheelchair Fencing Senior World Cup  at Stasdkanaal, The Netherlands.

IWAS Wheelchair Fencing Senior World Cup followed the U17 and U23 Competition being held at Stadskanaal, the Netherlands.

Over the course of three days, top International Wheelchair Fencers demonstrated their skills in Foil, Epee and Sabre. 

 

Paralympians Dimitri Coutya (GBR), Saysunee Jana (THA) and Richard Osvath (HUN)  all achived double golds in their chosen weapons with some outstanding fencing displayed  in the finals, after successfully fighting through the poule and direct elimination rounds.

Chui Yee Yu (HKG) came clsoe to achieving her own double, Beating Yevhenilia Breus (UKR) in the womend Cat A epee for a gold, but narrowly losing against  Zsuzsanna Krajnyak (HUN) in womens Cat A foil who took the gold medal. Breus also went on to take her own gold in the Womens Cat A sabre,and Beatrice Vio (ITA) picked up the final Gold in womend cat B Foil.

Piers Gilliver (GBR) retained his gold position from Pisa in the Men Cat A epee, whilst Adrian Castro (POL) took the gold in ght Mens Cat B Sabre.

The two team competitions taking place at Stadskanaal were the Mens Team Foil and Womens Team Epee.  Mens Team foild had a total of 8 teams from argentina, Brazil, France, Iraq, Italy, Japan, Poland and the Ukraine. both semi final mathches were nail biting events, with close scoring. Ukraine fought back bravely against Poland with a last minute comeback from Andril Demchuck, but Michal Nalewajek held his nerve for the final time out score of 42-43 to Poland. In the other Semi final Italy against France saw another neck and neck scoring match, with France pulling ahead in the penultimate match, only to have Emaunuele Lambertini (ITA) fight back with 9 points to take the eventulal score to 42-43. Poland versus Italy in the final match did not disappoint, an exceptional match by Matteo Betti (FRA) pulled the scores to 40-39, and Italy took the gold with a score of 45-44 after the final bout Lambertini against Nalewajek.

 

Womens Team Epee had 6 Teams from  France, Greece, Hong kong, hungary, Poland and the Ukraine. the semi final matches were between France and Hungary, followed by Hong kong and Poland. The women showed their determination and team spirit in the final between Poland and Hungary. Marta Fidrych (POL) and Zsuzsanna Krajnyak (HUN) had everything to play for when they started their final bout with a score of 30-35. after a hard battle the gold was won by Hungary with a final score of 45-36
