Inspiring performances by the World’s youngest

Day One of the IWAS World Junior Games in Puerto Rico

The first day of competition at the IWAS World Junior Games in Puerto Rica witnessed some inspiring performances by the World’s best youngsters in the RU Aquatic Complex in Mayaguez.

Once an amazing storm had passed over the impressive University complex causing a slight delay, American Jessica Rogers whose comes from the state of Virginia was the star of the first day of competition and she looks to have an outstanding future.

The 16 year old who swims in the S5 category and was born with Caudal Regression Syndrome which resulted in having her legs amputated at an early age won Gold in the 50m backstroke and Silver in the 200 Individual Medley.

Jessica has two more medal chances Saturday and she is also due to compete in wheelchair track racing and the Para Triathlon later in the Games.

The local crowd were delighted with the success of Jean Crespo. Competing in his first major competition the 22 year Puerto Rican won gold in the 200m freestyle and will surely help to inspire a new generation of future Paralympians from the Americans and Caribbean

One of the most emotional moments of the day was the performance of 15 year Indian swimmer Moin Junnedi.

The swimmer from Bombay who was born with a rare polio condition which meant he hasn’t any calcium in his system swum in the S1 50m freestyle event.

Moin supported by his coach and family and who has suffered 200 fractures since he was born received a standing ovation from his fellow swimmers, officials and crowd when he finished.

There were also some impressive performances by the Brazilian, Indian, and Chinese Taipei swimmers.

Saturday sees the start of the Archery tournament and the swimming continues
