First Para AirBadminton International Announced for Beach Games

16/05/2025

The first edition of the 2025 World Abilitysport Beach Games is set to welcome athletes from 18 – 25 October to the picturesque coastline of Mersin, Türkiye hosting a diverse sport programme of aquatic, open air and beach sports.

World Abilitysport and Badminton World Federation are partnering once again to include the discipline of Para AirBadminton on the 2025 World Abilitysport Beach Games programme.

Para AirBadminton joins a diverse sports programme of aquatic, open air and beach sports to be hosted along the picturesque Mediterranean coastline of the city of Mersin, Türkiye from 18-25 October 2025.

AirBadminton is an innovative development project for Badminton World Federation and is aimed at making the sport more accessible. The sport, for standing classes (SL3, SL4, SU5, SH6), can be played outdoor on hard surfaces, grass or sand. Whilst the rackets used remain the same as the indoor version, a specialized shuttlecock called “AirShuttle” has been designed to perform better outdoor than its feather counterpart, withstanding winds of up to 12km/hr.

Para AirBadminton will be sharing the city’s iconic Viransehir Beach with the 2025 Beach ParaVolley World Championships for four days of competition spanning 21-24 October.

World Abilitysport President, Rudi Van den Abbeele said, “We first partnered with Badminton World Federation for the 2019 IWAS World Games ahead of the sport’s Paralympic Games debut at Tokyo 2020. Since then, we have aimed to include this dynamic and inclusive sport across our Games programme and we are delighted that the first Beach Games is no exception.”

President of NPC Türkiye and the Local Organising Committee, Murat Aksu said, “AirBadminton is an exciting new addition to Badminton World Federation’s Para disciplines, and we are thrilled to be hosting the sport on Mersin’s picturesque coastline. Our ambition for the hosting of the Beach Games is to bring the sport to the people and I have no doubt the sporting excellence on display at AirBadminton will captivate the city’s spectators.”
