FINAL DAY OF ACTION AT THE IWAS WORLD GAMES IN STADSKANNAL IN HOLLAND
The fourth and final day of competition at the IWAS World Games in Holland saw some exciting performances in Stadskanaal, including a further two World Records in the pool.
Swimming – Prior to the start of the session there was a spontaneous build up of excitement in the pool. Volunteers started dancing along with the music during the warm up which spread throughout the pool hall. The Brazilian team lead the way and all enjoyed the build up to the swimming.
A further two World Records were broken during the session. First of all Estonia swimmer Kardo Ploomipuu set a new WR in the S10 Men’s 50m backstroke with a time of 27.12 beating the previous mark of 27.31, then the Chinese 20pt women’s freestyle team smashed the USA record (3m 50.55), with a new time of 3m 43.84 . The Chinese team consisted of Yaqin Ma, Cuan Yao Guofeng Meng and Li Can.
But the real excitement came from the new Iraq Freestyle relay team when they finished just behind the Russians, they went away singing at the top of their voices to the extent of having to calm them down before the next race could be started.
Archery – The final session saw the five gold medals up for grabs spread around the countries. Russia took two gold medals with Timur Tuchinov (who had already won gold in the Recurve Mixed Open the previous day) winning the individual Recurve title beating Brazils Luciano Rezende in the final.
Stepanida Artakhinova won the Womens Compound final (also her second gold of the Games) outscoring the Chinese archer Zhang Ye Ying.
The other 3 gold medals were won by Zaman Al-Saedi – Iraq (Recurve Women), Andrey Castro – Brazil (Compound Men) and Tseng Lung-Hui – Chinese Taipei (Recurve Men’s sitting).
Athletics – Plenty of action in the stadium with the UAE winning an amazing 6 gold medals. There were victories from Rashed Aldhaheri in the 5,000 and 400m wheelchair finals and Mohamed Hammad also won gold in his 400m category. In the field events there were gold medals for Ahmed Alhousani, Jumah Tenaiji and Maryam Matoushi.
Lithuania also had a good afternoon winning three gold medals. Mindaugas Bilius won his second gold medal of the week winning the Men’s Shot Put. Simonas Kurutis (Triple Jump) and Ramune Adomaitiene (Women’s Long Jump) were the other medallists
