Day 3 of competition from the IWAS World Games in Stadskanaal – 19th September
Archery
A number of medals were decided today on the Archery field after some competitive shooting, with Russia winning won both the Recurve and Compound Mixed Open Team events.
In the morning Timur Tuchinov and Irina Batorova beat the Iraq pair of Mustafa Kazem and Zaman Al-Saedi in the Recurve competition and in the afternoon Mikhail Diktovannyy and Stepanida Artakhinova outscored the Chinese team in the Compound final.
Brazil looked impressive in winning the Compound Men’s Open Team event beating Canada in the final and Iraq out shot Chinese Taipei to take the Gold medal in the Recurve Men’s Open Team competition.
Swimming
Another enthralling session in the Pagendal Aquatic pool this afternoon when Gabidullina Zulfiya from Kazahkstan broke another World Record (her third of the Games) with a time of 1.59.83 in the Women’s 100m freestyle. Gabidullina who medalled at the recent IPC World Swimming Championships in Montreal and was successful at the British International Disability Swimming Championships earlier in the year has had a superb couple of days in the pool.
The Brazilian swimmers Andrade Pamella (100m freestyle) and Souza Ruan Felipe (200m medley) looked impressive in winning their races and the Chinese and Russian teams also looked strong.
Athletics
One of the most anticipated contests in the field events this week was the Mens F42-47 Javelin competition. The crowd weren’t disappointed with Runar Steinstad from Norway throwing a distance of 44.18m to win gold just beating the Bulgarian athlete Dechko Ovcharov and the South Africa thrower Casper Schutte.
However there was plenty of Bulgarian gold medals when Mihail Hristov beat Japans Atushi Yamamoto in the Mens Long Jump final and Mustafa Yuseinov (Men’s Discus F55) and Stela Eneva (Womens Discus F57/58) won their respective events.
The UAE men had a good afternoon with victories for Rashed Aldhaheri in the (800 and 200m T54 races) and Mohamed Hammadi (200m T34/52/53).
In the Men’s Race Running events there was double gold and world record success for Scotland’s Gavin Drysdale in the 200 and 800m final. Sweden’s Rickard Nilsson also broke the WR in the 800m. Similar success in the Women’s races’ where Kayleigh Haggo also won double gold in her 200/800 events.
In the 800m race both her and Denmark’s Hayla Sondergaard broke the current WR.
