Action from the second day at the IWAS World Games 2013
Swimming
Although China and Russia dominated the medals in the pool at the Pagendal Sports Complex in Stadskanaal today, there were two World Records broken by Kazakhstan swimmer Gabidulin Zulfia. Gabidulin who competes in the S3 category won the Women’s 200m freestyle in a new WR time of 4.04.15 and then followed that up by winning gold in the 50m freestyle.
Athletics
There were two WR’s set on the track today all in Road Racing. Scotland’s athletes had a golden afternoon with 14 year old Gavin Drysdale winning the Men’s 100m Road Race in a new WR time of 19.51 and then Kayleigh Haggo also broke the WR in the Women’s T61-63 event.
However Hannah Dines finished first in her category of the Women’s Road Race. The 20 from Glasgow who is studying in Dundee was delighted with her first gold medal in a major championship. She said “ I was absolutely delighted to win especially as I have only been training for just over 13 months. It’s a chance to be recognised and to use my disability in a positive way. For me it’s about personal development and I hope to have further success, I have spoken with my family back home and they are all delighted”.
Three of the best races of the afternoon were the Men’s T42/44 100M when Japans Atsushi Yamamoto beat the Russian sprinter Vadim Aleshin in a time of 13.07.
Brazil then recorded two gold medal performances, first Bruno Marins Araujo beat the Iraq sprinter Fadhill Al-Dabbagh in the Mens T45-47 100m then Ma Jenifer Santos won the Women’s T36-38/44 in the Women’s event.
Archery
Today the individual final rounds for compound and recurve archers took place. In the morning the compound division took place. The men shot 5 ends of three arrows at 50 meters distance. This format is used in all final rounds (1/8, 1/4 and semi finals). We started with 16 men in the 1/8 finals and ended up with the 4 finalists, who will compete in the medal matches on Friday. The women started in the quarter finals stages.
In the afternoon the recurve archers shot their final rounds. After a heavy rain shower, we continued the competition with the men recurve W2 and Standing. The format for the recurve archers is a little different from compound division. The recurve archers shoot at 70 meters distance and they shoot best of 5 sets. One set is three arrows.
Tomorrow the team finals will take place, as well as the bronze and gold medal team finals. We are looking forward to celebrate the first gold medal winners in the mixed teams and the men and women compound and recurve open divisions.
